Flashlight Self Defense

Effective Self Defense With Your Flashlight

When people think of self-defense tools items like pepper spray, whistles, or weapons come to mind, but not flashlights. This blog post will explain the possible benefits that a flashlight can give you in a situation where self-defense is required.

Bezel:

Crenelated Bezel
Crenelated Flashlight Bezel

The bezel is usually found in the front area of a flashlight in a ring around the lens. Some bezels are more specialized for striking would-be attackers. These are known as crenelated bezels with the word “crenel” coming from the rocky outcrops seen on the top of the battlements of old castles. Bezels come in varying sizes and shapes with the more weaponized bezels being larger and sharper. Crenelated bezels are good for smaller tactical flashlights because they’re discreet and portable. The majority of flashlights make removing and replacing bezels simple, with most simply screwing on to the lens cap.

Using the Light:

There are a multitude of ways that you can use your flashlight’s standard functions to help ward off attackers.

Identification:

The majority of muggings and assaults occur at night, so simply having the ability to expose an assailant before they get close enough to attack you may be Lighting up dark parking lot
all you need to defend yourself. Using the light to properly identify your attacker should also double as an attention grabber for others to help you if you’re in a populated area.

Stun/Blinding:

Another function that can be used for effective self-defense is the strobe or high mode on your flashlight. Shining a strobe or high-powered beam into an attackers eyes is a great way to stun or blind the assailant. Stunning your attacker can give you the crucial few seconds needed to either escape, or fight back while they are unable to defend themselves. Low kicks or jabs are effective as the attacker will most likely raise their hands to cover their eyes leaving the lower half of their body exposed. Also, if your flashlight has a crenelated bezel attachment, this is the perfect opportunity for you to use it. Your flashlight should be sufficiently bright (over 100 lumens) in order for it to be truly effective in disorienting an attacker.

Use with a Gun:

Using Light with a GunMany people exercise their right to carry a firearm to defend themselves, but in dark situations, gun use may be dangerous or ineffective. Having a small tactical flashlight on your person is an easy fix to this problem because it allows you to light up your surroundings with one hand and use the gun with the other. It is important to note that you will not want to have your flashlight and gun pointing together, like on TV, or you may accidentally fire your gun if you are startled by something that your light beam uncovers.

Take it with you Anywhere:

Another big advantage to carrying a flashlight for self-defense is that you can take it with you almost anywhere, which cannot be said for other forms of defense like firearms and knives. The only situation that might cause you trouble is if the flashlight is fitted with a bezel that is deemed too dangerous, but this rarely happens if the bezel teeth are within reason. Most flashlights are small enough to be carried on your belt or in your purse and if you never end up needing to use it for defense, you will always have a high quality light source when you need it. New Product Spotlight: Nitecore’s Chargers Get Beefy Upgrades

Remember this guy?i2 Charger 2014 Model

It’s one of the best chargers we sell. Heck, it’s one of the best-selling chargers of all time. But doesn’t it look a little … I dunno, Radio Shack? Well, Nitecore decided that it was time to give their charger a makeover. They threw in some extra muscle as well. Meet the New i2.

New Paint + More Power = Better Charger

New i2 Charger 2016 ModelThe strength of the i2 series (and its 4-bay sister model, the i4) has always been that it can charge anything you throw at it. (I recently used our office’s old i2 to recharge my desk’s mini stapler and a piece of broccoli. Seriously, those bays will accept anything.) The New i2 upgrades the display of the previous version, offering more information about real-time charge level and voltage. The addition of buttons under the display allows you to set the charging voltage on each slot independently. Best of all, the new i2 allows you to put double the juice into whichever bay you select. The old i2 topped out at 500mA per bay, but the new version allows you to fast-charge one of your cells with 1000mA. One full amp of current means your battery is ready to rock that much more quickly.

Meet the Monster

SC2 ChargerWant even more control and flexibility? Step up to the new SC2, with even more features and raw power than the i2. With a selectable charge up to a whopping 3 amps of current, the SC2 allows you to recharge your lithium batteries in record time. This feature is ideal for IMR batteries, which are popular for vaping. (IMR chemistry can often accept higher recharge currents than other types of batteries. So while the new i2’s 1000mA current may be pushing it for some cells, lots of vape batteries are happy to accept 2 or even 3 amps of current.) Dual power inputs and a USB output give it maximum versatility. Compatible with a wide variety of cell formats, chemistries, and voltages, the SC2 is perfect whether you’re a vaper, flashoholic, photographer, or tinkerer.

It’s hard to beat Nitecore‘s chargers for their versatility, features, and speed. If you’ve been looking for your dream charger, grab an upgraded i2 or SC2 today!

Niteye MINI-1 Rechargeable

These Seven Keylights Will Make You Wonder How You Ever Lived Without Them

If you’ve never carried a flashlight by your side daily, it may not sound that useful. But much like a pocketknife or a lighter, once you begin carrying a keylight, you begin to see uses for it everywhere. Eventually you begin to wonder how you ever lived without one.

If you’re looking for the TL;DR version, jump to the bottom to see my top recommendations.

Carabiner LED flashlightI still remember the first time I used a keychain flashlight and saved myself some grief. It was a classic “fumbling with keys in the dark” moment. I had parked my car in a woodsy area off the road from where I worked. By nightfall it had become a minefield of rocks and tree branches, the kind of place where you might accidentally sneak up on a skunk or other critter. What’s worse, it was a moonless and overcast night, and the darkness was so inky, I could barely see my white car! I had to stumble over a rock before I remembered that I was actually carrying a light with me: a rinky-dink combination LED and carabiner.I was so used to thinking of it as the hook that attached my water bottle to my bag, I had forgotten it had a built-in flashlight. When I turned it on, I could see everything so clearly that I actually chuckled at myself for not thinking of it sooner. Instead of taking slow, cautious steps over the rocky ground, I was able to breeze right up to my car, unlock it, and get on the road after a long day’s work. From that point on, the problem wasn’t remembering to use my flashlight – it was keeping it loaded with fresh batteries!

So if you’re bewildered by all our gear, technical specifications, and unfamiliar brand names, no worries! As of this post I’ve been at Battery Junction for just over a month, and I feel like I’ve just dipped my toes in the water. In fact, part of the reason I’m writing this post is because I’m considering picking up a couple of these lights for myself and my loved ones. Let’s take a look at some of the coolest keylights in our inventory and find you a good match.

1) Niteye MINI-1 Rechargeable KeylightNiteye MINI-1 Rechargeable

The Mini-1 is so adorable I could explode. This stubby little guy is basically the size of a pen cap, but it blasts out an impressive 130 lumens, which puts it near the top of this list in terms of raw power. The real kicker is the durability of its construction. Machined out of stainless steel, the Mini-1 is rugged, waterproof, and 1M impact resistant. It’s far and away the toughest of the keylights I’m reviewing. It’s almost like they knew you’d be clipping it to your keychain and then dropping it. God, why is it so adorable? It comes with a rechargeable battery, and you can recharge it with a micro-USB cord. Cute overload!

How it ranks:

  • Easily the most durable keylight on this list!
  • In terms of brightness, it’s essentially tied for second place with the 132 lumen Titanium Innovations Illuminati.
  • Tied with the Photon for smallest form.
  • Moderately pricey, but probably the last keylight you’ll ever have to buy.

2) Titanium Innovations KEYLIGHTTitanium Innovations KEYLIGHT

I’m not gonna lie: we give these out for free on orders of $20+ because we know they’ll get you hooked. I wouldn’t blame you if you saw the $0.99 price tag on these and figured they’re cheap and mediocre, but as one of our highest-rated products, the 5 star reviews just keep pouring in. I grabbed one from the Warehouse, and I can totally see why customers are inclined to rave about the Keylight. It’s super tiny, about as light as a pen, and feels really natural between your thumb and forefinger. The button on it is very soft and easy to operate. Combined with fun colors for both the body and the LEDs, these are perfect for kids as safety lights. Buy them by the handful and give them away as stocking stuffers. Heck, if you want to buy in bulk for your company, event, or promotion, did you know we can even make them with custom labels? If you want to see how handy it can be to add a keylight to your everyday gear, but want to stay frugal, start here.

How it ranks:

  • Hands-down the cheapest keylight we offer, but still boasts impressive quality.
  • Second-smallest light on the list.
  • One of the highest-rated products we sell (5 stars, over 40 reviews).

3) Photon Micro-Light II KeylightPhoton Micro-Light II

I’d call the Micro-Light II the “big brother” of the Titanium Innovations KEYLIGHT, since it upgrades several key features. But the Photon is smaller than the KEYLIGHT, which kind of mucks up my whole “big brother” comparison. Oh well. The point is, it’s brighter, more durable, and slimmer than the KEYLIGHT, while still retaining the same basic form and simplicity.

The Photon Micro-Light II is the only light on this list to offer two on-off switches: a toggle switch for constant-on, and a thumb-press button if you just need momentary light. The LEDS are available in a variety of colors, some of which have neat properties or applications. (See a more detailed explanation of the uses for each color on the product page.)

How it ranks:

  • Tied with the Mini-1 for smallest form.
  • Tons of LED colors available if you have specific needs, or like rainbows.

4) Titanium Innovations Illuminati CA1-AL KeylightTitanium Innovations Illuminati CA1-AL

With its rugged good looks, 132 lumen beam, and three brightness settings, the Illuminati is quite possibly the perfect entry-level flashlight. Why? Because you get to experience some of the features of full-sized lights (rugged body, multiple brightness settings, waterproof seals) at a tiny size and an affordable price point. Unlike some of the other items on this list, the Illuminati actually looks like a flashlight, feels like a flashlight in your hands, and is sturdy enough to take a beating. The hard anodized aluminum body is a step up from the plastic of some of the smaller lights, but the Illuminati is still the size of the average car key. It runs on widely-available AAA batteries (though I recommend some high-quality rechargeables if you plan on using the full-strength beam often). IPX-7 water resistance means you can actually drop it in a meter of water and it will still operate. Its light weight and compact dimensions make it look and feel at home on your keychain.

How it ranks:

  • One of the only two lights on this list that takes AAAs (along with the Titan Plus).
  • In terms of brightness, it’s essentially tied for second place with the 130 lumen Niteye Mini-1.
  • Named one of the nicest-looking keylights in our totally scientific office poll.

5) Nitecore Tube KeylightNitecore Tube

We’re confused too. Here in the office, we’re still trying to figure out how the Tube got its name, seeing as there’s nothing tubular anywhere in its design. And since we’re a bunch of snarky geeks, we’d probably mock it to death if it weren’t so darn well-made. Instead, its name just became a loveable quirk of one of our favorite lights.

Feature-wise, the Tube is really impressive. It has two brightness settings, but you can also adjust the brightness to anywhere in between those fixed settings, allowing you to reach the perfect balance between brightness and battery life. It’s impact resistant and water resistant. And it recharges via USB micro cable—the same adapter type as most smartphones. It doesn’t shine as bright as some of the heavier hitters on this list, but it’s still more than enough raw power to get you out of the dark. The Tube is a true Jack-of-all-trades.

How it ranks:

  • One of the highest-rated products we sell (4.5 stars, over 100 reviews).
  • Well-balanced between brightness, features, and price.
  • Named one of the nicest-looking keylights in our totally scientific office poll.

6) Spotlight Turbo FlashlightSpotlight Turbo

Ok, fine, strictly speaking it’s not a keylight. The Turbo is a bit different from most of the lights we offer, in that it charges in your car lighter. But consider how often you need a light for your car. If you’ve tried to outsmart fate by putting a cheapo light in your glovebox, you probably grabbed it in your hour of need, only to find the batteries had died. Argh, they discharged from sitting unused for so long! Since the Turbo lives in your lighter outlet, it constantly stays charged to max capacity. Ideal for pinch hitting while you replace your dead dome light, locating a wallet that fell under the seat, or peeking under the hood in the dark.

How it ranks:

  • Cleverly sidesteps the dead flashlight batteries in your glove compartment.
  • Not exactly a keylight.
  • I put it on this list because I felt like it. Whatever. Don’t tell me what to do.

7) SureFire Titan Plus KeylightSureFire Titan Plus

They didn’t give it this name for nothing. The Titan is the light that will begin to inspire the lust and yearning that may convert you into a full-fledged flashoholic. It’s the brightest, biggest, and most expensive of the flashlights on this list. (Well, biggest, in a manner of speaking. It’s still super-portable. Compared to a Sharpie marker, it’s about as thick, and almost exactly as long as the gray body of the marker.) The stylish Titan tops out at 300 lumens, which is more than double the next-brightest lights on this list. Powered by a single AAA battery, this beast gets immense amounts of light out of a common and widely available cell. You’ll definitely want to invest in some good rechargeables if you spring for this one. Three different output levels let you adjust brightness based on your task. The body is constructed out of nickel-plated solid brass, which gives it a lovely heft. Plus Surefire products are guaranteed for life, so in the rare event that it breaks or malfunctions, you’re completely covered.

How it ranks:

  • The brightest on this list, by a longshot—more than twice as bright as the Mini-1 and Illuminati.
  • One of the only two lights on this list that takes AAAs (along with the Illuminati).
  • Three different brightness settings.
  • Named one of the nicest-looking keylights in our totally scientific office poll.

My recommendations:

Entry level no-brainer light:

Titanium Innovations KEYLIGHT

Perfect for newcomers who want to enjoy the utility of an everyday carry flashlight without breaking the bank. Also hard to go wrong if you’re having trouble deciding between the lights we’ve reviewed today. If you get one and find yourself wondering “What if it was a little brighter?” or “I wish the beam was a little more focused,” come back to this article and try one of my mid-tier recommendations.

All-around versatility:

Nitecore Tube

Affordable, compact, cool-looking, easy to recharge, tons of settings, and bound to make people ask where you got it. This is the light that many Battery Junction employees carry. After using the Tube for a year or two, you’ll know whether you need a more application-specific flashlight to compliment this great all-rounder.

The dream light:

Niteye MINI-1 Rechargeable

When you power up your Mini-1, folks of your preferred sex and gender will suddenly circle you, cooing at your style and sensibility. They’ll wonder how you combined such brightness with such a small form. They’ll marvel at its USB rechargeability and durable, waterproof frame. You will no longer have to pay for drinks, repay debts, or show up for work on time. You’ll slyly say that you paid a little more for it than some other keylights you could’ve bought, but it was worth every penny. You devil.

Surviving Post-Grad Life

Now that it’s almost June, many seniors have graduated from college and are heading out into the world on their own for the first time. While living on your own without mom or dad may seem a bit daunting, we here at Battery Junction can help you out!

Cooking

Possibly the biggest challenge you will face is having to cook on your own.  It’s Monday afternoon, you have run out of food in your apartment, and you realize that you need to take a trip to the store or risk starvation. After you’ve mentally psyched yourself up to go grocery shopping, you go to take your bike out when you realize just how dark it’s gotten. It’s not safe to ride your bike now, you don’t have reflective clothing! If only you could light up your bike so cars would see you. Good thing you have your SpokeLit LED attachable bike lights! Cars can now easily spot you down the road. You can now take that much needed trip to the store and successfully line your shelves with the proper amount of snacks, pasta, chicken, and TV dinners.

Going Out

It’s Friday night and you’re ready to explore your new city. After checking out the latest yelp reviews on a restaurant down the block that you’ve been eyeing, you decide to call a friend to grab a nice dinner. You deserve it from all of the cooking you did this week. Putting together your best outfit, you are about to walk out the door when you steal one last glance at yourself in the mirror. “I look fantastic,” you say, grinning, as you give yourself one last look over. Your eyes come to a rest on your ears. The smile slides off your face as you realize just how dull your jewelry looks in the light. You’re already running late so you quickly remove your earrings and head out, upset that your perfectly composed outfit didn’t work out. Don’t let your night get ruined again. Always look your best and get the GemOro Sparkle Spa Pro! With the cleanest and shiniest jewelry, you’ll be the talk of the city!

Staying In

One of life’s greatest tests is having to make the tough decision about whether or not to go out every night. On those evenings where you decide to stay in and save your money, your goal is to achieve maximum comfort. As you are lounging on the sofa, you try not to think about all of the meetings you have at work tomorrow. You put on a nice movie to distract yourself when all of a sudden the power goes out! Immediately you try to locate a light source. Phone light? Battery is dead.  (How could you let your phone die. Grab a charger.) Candles? Your apartment complex bans them. Flashlight? Perfect! I must have one of those! You fruitlessly hunt around your apartment only to have a dark thought crosses your mind: You don’t have a flashlight.  After sitting on the floor for several minutes reflecting on how you managed to survive this long on your own, the power miraculously returns. Immediately, you hop onto google to search our website for our vast selection of flashlights and settle on the Nitecore MH20 Rechargeable Flashlight. Lightweight and portable, you will never get caught in the dark again!

Make It Through the 13th: A Guide to Surviving This Frightening Friday

Broken Glass

It’s the end of the week, and while Fridays usually bring relief and joy, we find ourselves avoiding the cracks in the sidewalk and steering clear of dark colored felines. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen; we’ve Friday the 13th. While you haven’t necessarily succumbed to bad luck in previous years (knock on wood), it can’t hurt to plan around the possible jinxes that seem to be particularly present on this most unlucky of days, and Battery Junction is here to help you with your preparations.

Avoiding Black Cats:

black-catThese pesky hex machines are a prominent symbol for misfortune on any given day of the year, so encountering one on this particular date can only amplify the chances of receiving 13 years of bad luck. While you’re able to put your house on black cat lock-down, you won’t have the same environmental control once you step out into the outside world, so you’ll need something more mobile than walls to keep them from crossing your path. What better repellent is there to keep the cats at bay than their seemingly sworn enemy, man’s best friend. Keep a dog close to your side, which can be easily done with the help of a proper leash, and your path will stay clear of any unlucky felines.

Umbrellas Aren’t Worth The Risk:

Open-Umbrella-in-House-grey2001-300x233If it’s raining on your Friday the 13th, then you may already feel like bad luck has found you, but don’t let it trick you! All the rain is doing is prompting you to use one of most potentially unlucky objects out there; an umbrella. This seemingly innocent device may keep your head dry, but has the potential to cause a severe depletion in luck when opened inside and is just not worth the risk on this unluckiest of days. Sure, you may tell yourself that you’ll remember not to open it until you walk out the door, but all it takes is one distraction while you’re leaving and BOOM, you earn yourself an unhealthy dose of hexes. Keep yourself dry with a nice waterproof poncho, or better yet, just say inside; there could be black cats out there anyway.

Steer Clear of Hazardous Mirrors:

broken-mirrorSure, you’ve had that mirror in your bathroom since you’ve moved in and you’ve never come close to breaking it before. Well unfortunately, bad luck doesn’t check your track record of maintaining your reflective surfaces. It’s Friday the 13th, should checking to see if your hair looks good really your top priority? Be confident in your own appearance, or at least accept that approaching something so fragile on a day like today isn’t worth the potential 7 years of bad luck. If you truly find yourself in need of gazing upon your own beauty, at least use a nearly unbreakable mirror to lower your risk of jinxing yourself.

Be Ready For The Unexpected:

friday-the-13th-jason-voorheesFor 363 days of the year, we can all be fairly confident that a masked man wielding some form of bloody cutlery won’t be a major concern. However, from what horror cinema has taught us, today (along with Halloween) is the day where that sense of safety and doubt of the supernatural may cost us our lives. Don’t let your common sense lure you into a false sense of security; anybody wearing a hockey mask isn’t worth approaching. Just because you don’t live near Camp Crystal Lake doesn’t mean you’re safe (Jason somehow made into a spaceship, he can certainly make it to your front door). If you do unluckily stumble across a masked man wielding a long knife, make sure you’re evenly matched by carrying a machete of your own. With the proper equipment, you may just survive this Friday the 13th in one extremely paranoid piece.

Surviving the Fallout Wasteland

Surviving the Fallout Wasteland

A lot of us are video game geeks here at Battery Junction, and the Fallout franchise has a particular place in my heart. I’ve been a Fallout fan since the very first game came out on the PC. The recent announcement of the Creation Kit for Fallout 4 is about to turn that game into a modder’s paradise. In celebration of this event, let’s take a look at some of our best gear for surviving the post-nuclear wasteland.

Here, Dogmeat! Good boy.

Fallout 3 Dogmeat vs Behemoth by u/Khusley

You might have the wits to hang back and snipe a Super Mutant Behemoth from afar, but of course your trusty canine companion insists on running up and gnawing on its ankle. How do you call him back to your side? By whistling, of course! But how can you be heard over all that gunfire? With the piercing shrill of a survival whistle. Our Fenix Lifesaving Whistle (stainless steel) and Nitecore Emergency Whistle (titanium) both emit up to 120 decibels of ear-piercing sound. Both feature a dual-flute design that makes them easier to use than conventional whistles. Choose the shape and metal that’s right for you! Just don’t blow it inside your power armor helmet. Ouch.

Time for a Nuka Break

Homemade Fallout Nuka Caps by Etsy user NukaColaCaps

Every time you crack a Nuka Cola, you get a little richer. The refreshing taste gets even sweeter when that brand new bottle cap hits your purse, since caps are currency in the post-apocalypse. But of course Nuka Cola didn’t anticipate nuclear war, so they probably neglected to make twist-off tops. That means you’re not getting any soda OR bottle caps unless you have a bottle opener. The Nite Ize GetLit is an office favorite because of its goofy name, but it’s a wasteland favorite because of its portability. Easy to clip onto your backpack or vault jumpsuit, the GetLit’s built-in LED makes it easy to open bottles for that Nuka boost even at night. Unless you’re drinking a glowing, radioactive bottle of Nuka Cola Quantum. But of course you aren’t. Nobody actually drinks their Quantum. They’re for hoarding.

Hey, does this smell like explosion to you?

Fallout 3 Plasma Grenade

Unless you have a PipBoy, you probably can’t stop time mid-combat. That means you need to have your weaponry close at hand. You’re gonna want our rugged Maxpedition Double Frag Grenade Pouch to hold your pop rocks. Technically the pouches are designed to hold standard issue military frag grenades like the M67 or MK2, but who uses those? Regular frags are weaksauce. I’m sure the pouches can hold Enclave standard-issue plasma grenades just fine. I like to name mine. The one on the left is “Good Karma,” and the one on the right is “Bad Karma.”

Don’t drink the water

Fallout 4 water pump

Ok, so it won’t remove the radiation from your water, but our line of SteriPEN UV Water Purifiers will kill just about anything else that wriggles, swims, or crawls through your drink. Just submerge the pen in your water bottle, and its UV rays will roast microbes faster than you can say “Giddyup Buttercup.” Combine the UV pens with our water bottle filters to remove particles from your water as well. It’s no Project Purity, but then again, you can’t really fit the Jefferson Memorial in your inventory without becoming overencumbered.

A well-lit settlement is a happy settlement

Fallout 4 raider, blinded by the light

Those pesky raiders are always skulking around your settlements at night. Light ‘em up! The Sunforce 60 LED Ultra Bright Solar Motion Light is motion-activated, so the moment someone crosses your perimeter, they’ll be lit up with the fury of this massive LED array. And the maintenance-free, weather resistant solar panel means that this beast will draw minimal power from your generators. Imagine the look on their ugly mugs when this thing switches on and blinds them.

Patch yourself up

Fallout 4 Stimpack

Medicine in Fallout may be leaps and bounds ahead of real life, but sooner or later, you’re gonna run out of Stimpaks. When it’s time to heal up the old fashioned way, you’re going to want a versatile kit at hand. Enter the Marine First Aid Kit 2.0 from Ultimate Survival Technologies. Packed in an ultra-light, water-resistant pouch, the kit is jam-packed with supplies for a variety of medical situations. Grab one for your car, one for your house, and one for your pack brahmin.

For those late nights in the workshop

Lights in Fallout 4 Workshop

It’s another 3 A.M. session of reinforcing your power armor with radiation resistant lead plating. Highlight those fine details with the Wagan Brite Stick XT Rechargeable Worklight with Magnetic Base. Use the magnets to go hands-free and stick it wherever you need light. Super-bright LEDs make for low power consumption. Use the included adapters to recharge it by day. It’s a tinkerer’s dream.

Carrying Capacity

Maxpedition Kodiak S-Type Gearslinger

Everybody knows that the only way to beat Fallout is to pick up every single item. Garden gnome? Could come in handy. Iguana on a stick? You might not want to eat it, but you can probably sell it to someone who does. Your own amputated sixth toe that you grew after stepping in radioactive goo? Who knows, it might insta-kill the end boss. But where are you gonna stash all that stuff? You’re going to need a sweet pack. We carry tons of survival- and tactical-oriented bags, but the Maxpedition Kodiak S-Type Gearslinger has some features that make it particularly suited for the wasteland. Anti-theft zipper pulls make it harder for punks to pickpocket you (or stash live grenades in your bag). And the concealed carry weapon (CCW) pouch makes it easy to carry a handgun out of sight. Simply swing the bag around your shoulder to access it.

Mr. Handy in your pocket

Fallout 3 Mr. Handy

In a perfect wasteland, you’d have a RobCo Mr. Handy unit by your side at all times, to assist you with everyday operations such as repairs, salvage, and flamethrowing. But when you need to strike out on your own, the next best thing is a multitool. Leatherman invented the multitool, so you’d be hard pressed to find a better manufacturer. Their MUT EOD tool is one of their few heavy/military duty pieces, making it perfect for the rigors of the radioactive wilderness. Plus it has MUT in its name, which makes it extra-ironic when you use it to slice open mutfruit. Or super mutants.

What’s your favorite piece of real-life wasteland survival gear? What mods are you most excited to see? What’s the closest experience you’ve had to Fallout in real life? What crucial survival gear are did we forget? Let us know in the comments. We read every single one.

Gearing Up For Spring – A Guide to Your First Day of Warm Weather

Well, it’s that time of year again. The snow has melted, the grass is growing, and it’s beginning to stay consistently warm enough to venture outside without a winter coat and gloves. Now that it is finally becoming bearable to stay outside longer than the walk from your car to your doorstep, preparations need to made for the inevitable outdoor activities. We’ve saved you some trouble by compiling a list of recreational essentials to ensure you are ready for a full day of play, from sunrise to sunset.

Dawn:

Dawn_-_swifts_creek02Rise and shine! It’s been a while since you’ve been outside at this time of day, or at least outside voluntarily for longer than 90 seconds.  The sun is shining and you realize you forgot just how bright the sun is at this hour. You’d planned to go for an early morning bike ride or hike, but you won’t get far doing either if you can’t keep your eyes open wider than a squint.  Instead of remaining stationary until your eyes can adjust to this Spring Sun, pick yourself up a pair of Wiley X Guard Sunglasses. Designed for high velocity protection, this stylish eyewear can ensure the wear and tear of any outdoor activity. These glasses are even available with changeable lenses to better fit your need to dull the Sun’s rays.

Mid Day:

You did it! You completed your first attempt at outdoor exercise of the calendar year. Now that you’ve reached the top of your mountain or the end of your trail, its time for a well earned meal under the warm sun to refuel for the venture back. Unless you wore a pair of cargo pants with pockets fully stocked, you’ll probably need a backpack  like the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II Backpack to help you transport your sustenance.  Compact and lightweight, this comfortable pack comes with a number of secure and breathable straps that make it easy to carry, no matter what the activity. But don’t let it’s pygmy size fool you; this pack features over 10 sizable pouches and pockets to hold all the food and fixings you’ll need for your victory meal. You won’t have trouble staying hydrating either, as the backpack even features 2 water bottle pouches that can each hold a 1L Nalgene bottle!

Sunset:

Finally! You made it back just in time to see the sun fading over the horizon. While the trek home was less strenuous than the initial expedition, your legs are certainly tired from the constant exertion. But the day (or night at this point) is still young; you have of time to squeeze in a few more activities before this beautiful first day of Spring is over. With the sun nearly gone, it seems like it would be difficult to fit in another outdoor activity, but not with Nite Ize’s FlashFlight Flying Discs and LED Disc Golf Discs. These durable discs use sophisticated LEDs to give off a luminous glow that make them clearly visible in the dead of night, so you’ll never lose track of them. Tossing a Frisbee with some friends or playing a few leisurely holes of Disc Golf will be the perfect way to unwind after such a full day of recreation, and with these discs you can play as late as you wish!

You’ve finally wrapped up your first day of Spring and it has been a smashing success! While your body may be sore, your heart feels content with the numerous outdoor activities you were finally able to do after months confined to your house. But don’t let soreness keep you inside longer than it has to; you have a bunch of new gear to use and a few seasons of warm weather to take advantage of!
